Donald Trump might pardon Joe Arpaio? Whoa

Laurie Roberts: 'Is there anyone in local law enforcement who has done more to crack down on illegal immigration than Sheriff Joe?' Trump told Fox News.

It pays to have friends in high places.

Fox News is reporting that President Donald Trump may soon pardon Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio for his criminal offense.

“I am seriously considering a pardon for Sheriff Arpaio,” Trump told Fox News on Sunday. “He has done a lot in the fight against illegal immigration. He’s a great American patriot and I hate to see what has happened to him.”

Never mind that what has happened to him happened because he ignored a federal judge’s order to stop racially profiling people.

U.S. District Court Judge Murray Snow ordered Arpaio in 2011 to stop enforcing immigration law because his deputies were pulling over people based solely upon the color of their skin. Never mind that some of those people were American citizens or immigrants legally in the United States.
He'd intervene on a misdemeanor?

Arpaio is awaiting sentencing in October after being convicted of criminal contempt of court. He could face up to six months in prison or, more likely, probation.

Now Trump might pardon him before he’s even sentenced?

The president of the United States is going to intervene in a misdemeanor prosecution? Going to pardon a guy who violated a federal judge’s order for 18 months?

“Is there anyone in local law enforcement who has done more to crack down on illegal immigration than Sheriff Joe?” Trump said.

Put another way: Is there anyone in local law enforcement who has so blatantly ignored the lawful order of a federal judge and gotten away with it?

Pardoned for pulling over people — including American citizens — simply because of the way they look.

Here. In America.
