Discussion: Confronting Minutemen Vigilantes At The Border

As migration becomes the specter haunting empire, freedom of movement across
national borders is critical in the struggle against empire. Jacob from the
organic collective will discuss the Triple Fence, The REAL ID Act, the rise of
the Minutemen vigilantes, and current resistance to each of these. He will also
show a short video from recent border actions and will lead a discussion
centered around the migration, white supremacy and the war on terror. Jacob is
a member of the organic collective, a noborder anarchist collective based in
San Diego which is confronting anti-immigrant machinations embodied by the
Minutemen and materialized by the border.

famed writer and activist Ariel Dorfman!

Dorfman's work concerns itself with the confluence between art and human
rights, and the role of artists in relation to oppression, and the
relation between individual struggle and systemic inequity. His
characters occupy two worlds: forced into exile, victims of torture,
socially marginalized. To put it simply, some people have rights and
others don't but how do these two groups relate?

We here at Picture the Homeless are honored to be co-presenting this
event with an amazing artist whose work tackles so many of the questions
undergirding our own work: organizing people whose basic human rights
have been violated to hold accountable the political and economic
systems that oppress them.

space at Riverside. Seven Stories Institute will be selling Dorfman~Rs
books at half price, and Picture the Homeless will be selling our
dynamic DVD anthologies featuring short films by homeless New Yorkers
organizing to fight for recognition of their own human rights~Wso make

Ariel Dorfman: Chilean novelist, playwright, essayist, journalist and
human rights activist, b. Argentina. Dorfman~Rs family moved to the
United States shortly after his birth, settling in Chile in 1954. He
attended and was a professor at the University of Chile. Forced into
exile following the Chilean military coup of 1973, he had divided his
time between Santiago and the United States since the restoration (1990)
of democracy in his homeland. Since 1985 he has taught at Duke
University. Dorfman has written powerful fiction often dealing with the
horrors of tyranny and, in later works, the trials of exile. His 1990
play Death and the Maiden is one of the greatest dramatic works of the
past thirty years; it was later made into a brilliant film by Roman
Polanski, starring Ben Kingsley and Sigourney Weaver.

La obra de Dorfman se concierne con la relación entre el arte y los
derechos humanos, y el papel de l@s artistas en relación con la
represión. Sus personajes ocupan dos mundos: exiliados, victimizados por
tortura, marginalizados socialmente. La pregunta crítica de su temática:
¿cómo es posible que algunos tienen derechos y otros no?, y ¿cómo es
que los dos grupos co-existen?

Nosotros en Picture the Homeless nos sentimos honrados al poder
co-presentar este evento con un artista increíble, quien en su obra
artística se dirige a tantas de las preguntas que orientan nuestro
trabajo, organizando a personas desamparadas que han sufrido violaciones
de sus derechos humanos más básicos para enfrentar y cambiar los
sistemas políticos y económicos que los oprimen.

Ariel Dorfman: Ensayista, narrador y dramaturgo de nacionalidad chilena,
nacido en Buenos Aires (Argentina). Asesor cultural del gobierno de
Salvador Allende, salió de Chile en 1973, tras el golpe de Estado del
general Pinochet, y se exilió en Francia. Posteriormente se trasladó a
Estados Unidos, país donde había transcurrido parte de su infancia. Allí
comenzó a colaborar en periódicos como el New York Times y el Washington
Post, y también escribió algunos de sus ensayos más polémicos, como es
el caso de Los sueños nucleares de Reagan (1986), donde reflejaba su
perspectiva de la realidad sociopolítica estadounidense. Es asimismo
autor de la obra teatral La muerte y la doncella (1992), en la cual
reflexiona sobre la represión política, la tortura y sus secuelas.
Llevado al cine por Roman Polanski en 1994 con Sigourney Weaver y Ben
Kingsley, este libreto fue adaptado en diversos países y obtuvo
numerosos premios.
