The New York Civic Participation Project (NYCPP), a project of La Fuente
a Tri State Worker & Community Fund, Inc., is a joint initiative of labor
unions and community organizations that promotes immigrant and worker
rights by engaging union members in community organizing.

The NYCPP was initiated by SEIU Local 32BJ, UNITE HERE Local 100, AFSCME
DC 37, Make the Road by Walking and the National Employment Law Project.
The NYCPP also works closely with other union, community and city-wide
partners.

The Project engages immigrant union members in civic participation
through several campaigns addressing the social, political and economic
concerns of low-wage immigrant workers. It builds grassroots
partnerships and political power bases with community organizations,
immigrant advocates, religious groups and others, to advance worker
justice, immigrant rights, and community services.

Our goal is to develop long-term political and social alliances that
foster sustainable civic participation and political power for immigrant
workers. The NYCPP currently works with immigrant communities in
Washington Heights, the South Bronx and Queens. The Organizer will work
with union members, community activists and community partners in the
neighborhood to support the Project's work in Washington Heights or the
South Bronx.

The Organizer will:

* Do outreach via phone calls, house visits and meetings with union
members and community partners;
* Develop campaign workplans and timelines;
* Create strategic partnerships at the community and city-wide levels;
* Conduct leadership development programs & trainings for union and
community members;
* Create community education programs, materials and training
materials; and
* Do database and office work related to his/her organizing.

Qualifications:

* Experience working with or knowledge of Washington Heights and
or the South Bronx a plus;

* Coalition building and outreach skills among community
institutions, grassroots organizations, unions, churches, service
agencies, etc.;

* Team building and leadership development skills;

* Experience implementing grassroots action and policy campaigns;

* Ability to communicate in Spanish and English is required; and

* Commitment and passion for social justice.

The Lower East Side Tenement Museum is seeking an Education Associate for
Contemporary Immigrant Perspectives, who will report to the Education
Director. S/he will be responsible for: helping to promote dialogue on
contemporary immigration-related issues; incorporating the diverse
perspectives of contemporary immigrants into the Museum's programming; and
constantly striving to make the Museum more accessible to and relevant for
new immigrants. S/he also assists the Education Director in raising
awareness among Museum staff about various viewpoints on issues related to
contemporary immigration.

Responsibilities include:

* Coordinate the Kitchen Conversations dialogue and Dialogue on Diversity
programs;
* Coordinate the Shared Journeys English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
programs;
* Coordinate the Windows of 97 art installation program and corresponding
public programs;
* Assist with marketing and fundraising for above programs;
* Represent the Museum to funders, press, artists, exhibitors, and others as

Required Qualifications:

This is a grant-based position (employment will continue only for the duration
of the grant).

General:

1. The Cuban-Haitian Community Outreach Coordinator ("Coordinator") is
the person in charge of the state-government-sponsored NJIPN activities
with the Cuban-Haitian refugee and asylee community. The Coordinator
must be appreciative of and responsive to the needs of NJIPN and its
network constituencies. The Coordinator will function under the frequent
guidance and supervision of the executive director.

2. The Coordinator must have the ability to effectively represent NJIPN
at events and meetings. Various organizations and individuals, members,
coalition partners, and professionals including those working in the
field of immigration policy and advocacy constitute the NJIPN coalition
across the state of New Jersey and beyond.

3. The nature of the position is such that working hours must be
flexible. However, the Coordinator will schedule a minimum of 40 hours
per week. Weekend and evening meetings are held routinely and often.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Coordinator's outreach strategy includes the following major
elements:

1) Existing relationships established in previous years, including key
Cuban-Haitian community leaders, grassroots and community organizations,
law-enforcement officers, among others;

2) The Network's statewide membership base in general, and a number of
community-based organizations (CBO's) that are closely linked with
persons in various Cuban-Haitian neighborhoods, in particular.

Specific Goals:

Goal #1: Strengthen existing community networks among the Cuban-Haitian
population and establish new ones to develop crime preventive strategies
and programs.

Objectives:

1) Conduct one statewide summit in this year -- as in previous years --
bringing together key leaders to define: 1) specific barriers faced by
Cuban-Haitian entrants, 2) proposed channels for prevention and
deterrence of exploitation/victimization, 3) and the framework for
outreach. (It is anticipated that 100 participants will attend).

2) Coordinate 12 (twelve) committee meetings, The four committees will
be "Education and Resource", "Cuban-Haitian Women's Issues", "Policy and
Advocacy", and the "NJ Cuban-Haitian Cultural Committee".
Representatives of the committee will consist of various sectors
thoughout the state of NJ (religious, civic, law enforcement, legal
services, education, health, business, social service, and Cuban-Haitian
student associations, among others) to assist in developing community
presentations/education forums to engage the Cuban-Haitian community in
the project activities and to review the project's progress and impact
on the community.

Goal #2: Reduce the incidences of victimization, exploitation and crime
by increasing civic participation, therefore empowering Cuban-Haitian
entrants to be more proactive on their own behalf.

Objectives:

1) Maintain an 800-number "assistance line" to direct assistance-seeking
callers from the Cuban-Haitian community to appropriate service
providers in the support network.

2) Conduct in coordination with local community based and grassroots
organizations, 7(seven) community/regional presentations/education
groups, (three in each of three regions) to a total of 360 participants,
on topics identified through the summit, community liaison group, and
through previous presentations/education groups.

3) Conduct 3 (three) leadership development training for key
leaders/organizations. Among them: grant writing, fund raising,
organizational management, and community mobilization and empowerment,
or others as identified by the key leaders, for a total of 30
participants.

4) Update the statewide service directory, created in year one, specific
to the Cuban-Haitian community of services/providers that provides
contact information, range of services, service fees and linguistic
capability.

Other Goals:

Create a better perception among the community in New Jersey about
immigrants and their concerns and their relationship to the American
principles of democracy, equality and civil and human rights and
liberties.

Requirements:

1. Minimum of 1-2 years of experience as an organizer in the
Cuban-Haitian community.

2. Familiarity with the operation of non-profits and rights and justice
movements through work experience.

3. Experience to work with grassroots groups, immigrant rights and
justice groups and other peer organizations in New Jersey.

4. Understand the Network's larger mission and progressive coalition
building.

5. Appreciative of working in a mutually respectful, professional, open
environment.

6. Able to easily communicate in English and Haitian Creole.

Additional Qualifications:

1. Working knowledge of French or Spanish a plus.

2. Proficiency in public speaking.

3. Able to handle multitasking.

4. Abilities to supervise junior staff, interns and volunteers.

5. Abilities to drive own car throughout NJ and nearby areas with a
valid driver's license.

and public safety services. The Senior Program Associate will primarily work
on a new national project, funded by the Office of Refugee Resettlement
(ORR), aimed at improving legal representation for unaccompanied immigrant
children in immigration court. Vera will be subcontracting with several
