The Immigrant Workers Union (IWU) and many other organizations are organizing a March. The March will begin at the Capitol May 1st at 12:00 pm. The event is part of the series of demonstrations in a around the country asking for reform, a reform that offers a solution to all immigrants in the nation. In Wisconsin, there will be various marches; all including in the demands stopping the new driver licenses law.
Besides the marches, National pro immigrant organizations have called for a National Boycott in May 1st. The boycott consists of not working, not buying, not selling, or going to school. The boycott demonstrates that we are a vital part in labor and economic in this country.
In Madison, we celebrate May 1st by marching from the Capitol towards Brittingham Park. At the park, there will be a celebration with food, drink, and information supporting the struggle for our rights.
This year is the 130th anniversary of the strike in Chicago that obtained an 8 hour working day. Since then, most countries in the world celebrate May 1st as International Workers Day. This Thursday, Dane County Board will vote a resolution, sponsored by IWU and county supervisor Ashok Kumar, in order to recognize May 1 st and asking for employers to allow workers to take the day off to participate in the festivities. The vote will take place this Thursday April 19th at 7pm in Room 201 at the City County Building. (210 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.)
